At the beginning of November, Hostpoint customers were given the option to activate free SSL encryption for any domain hosted or registered with us. What do we hope to achieve with this? The point of our FreeSSL initiative was to make an active contribution to improving the security of (personal) data transmitted over the Internet.
A 30% increase in encrypted websites
But we never expected that customers would literally be lining up to get their hands on this free encryption – over 17,000 websites are already using FreeSSL to encrypt their data traffic between websites and customers’ web browsers. This translates to an increase of more than 30 percent if you compare the figure to the Netcraft SSL Survey Switzerland for September 2015. In other words, since the end of September 2015, the number of encrypted websites in Switzerland has increased dramatically by more than 30 percent. We think this marks a great success for a more secure Internet!
Encryption with a click of the mouse
Internet security is becoming an increasingly important issue. Much too often, sensitive data such as usernames, passwords or personal details continues to be transmitted over unencrypted data connections. Above all, site providers need to ensure that data is encrypted during transmission. This is no longer a problem thanks to FreeSSL: All it takes is a click of the mouse in the Hostpoint Control Panel, to enable encryption. Free.
Together for more security
Let’s Encrypt will be the next provider to offer free SSL certificates. This isn’t causing us any headaches. On the contrary, Let’s Encrypt fits in perfectly with our FreeSSL initiative. This is why we’re sponsoring this non-profit certification authority by offering them a substantial donation.
FreeSSL: also available for use with our competitors
By the way: Did you know that our FreeSSL certificates can also be used with our competitors? In other words, if you have registered your domain with Hostpoint, but it is hosted by another web hosting provider, you can download the certificate for your domain in Hostpoint’s certificate manager. Instructions can be found in our Support Center.
